President’s Corner, December 3, 2009
The December meeting is looking like we are going to have another big attendance.
BE SURE TO RSVP PRIOR TO THE MEETING
Lee Orgeron asked that I remind everyone that he will be collecting unwrapped Christmas gifts for the needy at the December General Membership Meeting. This is a good way for our organization to be involved in the community. These gifts are being donated to the Catholic Social Services.
On December 12 & 13, 2009 the Bayou Chapter will again sponsor lunch at the Hunter's Education Course held at the Terrebonne Rifle range on Savanne Rd. Page Durocher could use a couple hours of your help. If you can help cook hamburgers for a couple of hour one of these mornings the participants & Page sure would appreciate it.
The IADC HSE&T Conference will be held in Houston on January 26-27, 2010. This is a good safety conference especially if you work in the drilling services industry. I generally attend, and plan to attend again this year. Click here for more information.
Thanks, and see you Tuesday at the meeting.

President’s Corner, October 7, 2009
I would like to thank everyone for making the September 2009 meeting a success. I personally define a successful meeting as one that I gain information to help solve new challenges, or a meeting that motivates me to revisit or improve upon old challenges. I also judge the success of a meeting on whether or not I met a new safety professional, or saw an old contact that I have not spoken to in a while. The September meeting met these benchmarks. I look forward to this month's meeting.
We identified an area of improvement at the last meeting, and it is discussed below.
The Problem:
If there was anything that could have gone better at the general membership meeting it would have been the timeliness and organization of the lunch distribution.
The Solution:
The executive committee & I have come up with a solution. I am asking members to RSVP and pay the meeting fee in advance when possible. Those members that I spoke to about this already, like the idea. Also, it seems that payment by credit card is the most preferable way to pay the meeting fees.
The New Meeting Process:
Those members planning to attend the October General Membership meeting are being asked to RSVP no later than 9:00 AM the morning of the meeting. The orders will be printed and faxed to Big Al's Restaurant around 9:30 AM. Big Al's will have the RSVP lunches ready and distributed for 11:30 AM. We have a Pay Pal account set up on the Chapter website for meeting fee payments. This will make for a more quick efficient meeting. If this RSVP setup is as successful as anticipated, we will continue with this in the future. It will only cost the Chapter about a dollar per person to use pay pal. Meeting fees will not have to change.
According to Jonathan, Bayou Chapter Treasurer, the large turnout at the September meeting profited around $200.
Click on the link above to RSVP.
Those that do not RSVP will either have to order the daily special when they arrive at Big Al's, or have their meal brought out after the Guest Speaker presents (like in the September meeting).
And remember, active members eat free at the Chapter's crawfish boil in May. An active member is one that attends at least 50% of the General Membership meetings.
See you at the meeting and please,
Répondez s'il vous plaît.
Thanks & have a safe day,
Heath B. Degruise, CSP

President’s Corner, August 28, 2009
The Greater Baton Rouge Chapter of ASSE wants to hold a joint meeting between the Acadiana Chapter, GBR Chapter and the Bayou Chapter in Addis, Louisiana. The GBR Chapter would like a headcount so please contact me if you plan to attend the joint meeting. Feedback of your thoughts on a joint meeting is also welcome. Click here to view the GBR meeting schedule.
I recently added an employment page to the Chapter's website. If you have any HSE related job openings or internships, send me (the webmaster) the details you would like to see posted. There have also been many employment agencies contacting the membership and myself on employment opportunities. For a small donation to the Chapter, I can post a link to their job posting as well. Please offer this service should anyone contact you. I will also try to send out an email to the membership anytime the employment page is updated.
This year's Hunters Education course is scheduled for December 12 & 13, 2009. You may visit the Hunter's Education Page or contact Page Durocher for more details.
I am looking forward to the new fiscal year & serving as your Chapter's President. The 1st Bayou Chapter general meeting is scheduled for September 8, 2009. Terryl lined up a great speaker for us.
Keep in mind, to show appreciation for active membership, all active Bayou Chapter Members (members that attend 50% or more of chapter meetings during the 2009-2010 year) eat crawfish free at the May 2010 crawfish boil. Non-Active Members, Guest, and Student Members will still need a $25 advanced ticket.
Thanks & have a safe day,
Heath Degruise, CSP, ASSE Bayou Chapter President
